How to get tomato sauce out of clothes

The tomato sauce situation

Tomato sauce stain removal doesn't require anything dramatic. Work quickly, keep the water cold, and let nature do the rest.

Cold water first, always. Hot water sets the stain before you've had a chance to fight it.

The moment a tomato sauce stain lands, resist the urge to scrub. Blot it gently and get to the sink.

Turn the garment inside out and hold the stained area under a steady stream of cold water. Running it from the back pushes the stain out through the fabric rather than deeper in. Hot water is not an option here. Heat bonds the pigment to the fiber and makes tomato sauce stain removal significantly harder.

For white fabrics, lemon juice is your next step. Dampen a clean sponge and apply it to the stain with a light, dabbing motion. Lemon juice acts as a gentle, natural bleaching agent, and when paired with sunlight, it quietly does the rest. Note that it's best suited to white or undyed fabrics. On colored garments, skip this step to avoid lightening the dye.

Once treated, run the piece through the washing machine as usual.

Dry it in the sun

After washing, skip the dryer. Hang the garment in direct sunlight and let it air dry. If any faint trace of the stain remains, the sun's natural bleaching effect will finish the job. It's an old method. It works.

For a detergent that's as considered as the rest of your routine, Steamery's Delicate Laundry Detergent lifts stains without stripping fibers. Gentle enough for silk and wool, effective on the stains that matter.
